Camping is one of our favorite pastimes, and for good reason! There aren’t too many other activities out there today that help us slow down and unplug from the busy-ness of life in the way that camping does. Time just seems to slow down and work feels farther away than ever. There is something about getting rid of the modern conveniences that allows us to relax and just enjoy being alive without all the email, texts, and business calls getting in the way.
The only drawback to camping has always been good food. It"s the unfortunate side effect of "roughing it" that you don"t have access to an oven, refrigerator, microwave, or any of the other appliance that we all rely on to get a good, wholesome, home-cooked meal. It"s not like we starve on the camping trip, but hot dogs and marshmallows are only fun to eat for so long before it gets tedious. There is always the temptation to step up the experience by bringing along some of those modern cooking conveniences, which some people do, opting for big stovetops and electric travel cookers of all kinds of shapes and sizes. There is something about that, though, that dilutes the real experience of camping. Isn"t the point to be able to unplug and get away from all the stuff? Where does someone draw the line if cooking supplies are all good no matter how modern or complicated. At the same time, we should be able to have good food during our camp. Right? The point is to enjoy the adventure and the vacation. And when the food selection is that limited, it hurts the experience. If only we could enjoy the adventure and fun of making new and exciting foods without the bother of packing up all of our kitchen gadgets in hopes of getting access to electrical power.
