December 7, 1941 the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked US military base at  Pearl Harbor, Hawaii leaving 2,403 dead, 188 destroyed planes and a  crippled U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet. Following the attack, Japan  officially declared war on the US. This was immediately followed by the  war message from President Roosevelt who then and signed a formal  declaration of war against Japan.
